Guidance Curriculum objectives are administered in a variety of ways, including...
Kristin's counseling approach is student centered...
Classroom Guidance-
I teach all K-5 grade classrooms once a month for 30 min, on a rotating schedule. Topics include problem solving , Monthly Character traits and whole class Yoga calm.
Small Groups-
Each 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher nominates a group of 4-6 students to participate in a small counseling group that meets with me three times a month for 30 minutes a session for 6-8 weeks. Topics are selected by the teacher based on need, and can include self-esteem, anger management, exploring emotions, attention, study skills, divorce, grief, relational aggression, healthy relationship building skills, familial issues, etc.
Please contact me if you feel this is something your child could benefit from.
Individual Check In's-
Though I don't have time to provide individual therapy, I do frequently meet with students one-on-one on an as-needed basis, and by parent and teacher request. The counseling center is always open for any student to come in and request to talk with me during the school day.
Lunch Groups-
Students can eat lunch in the counseling office with us and their friends. This is a great casual way to talk with students without them missing class time and for us to facilitate friendships in the lunch group. This is on a rotating basis.
Teacher Consultation-
I keep an open communication with all of the teachers about how to manage the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of their classroom, and we work together as a team with parents to support each students. If you have a concern about your child in the classroom, please talk to the classroom teacher before coming to me, if there is still a concern please contact me.
Parent Support-
A huge part of my job is working with parents to help guide them to appropriate resources and consulting with families on specific issues and life events that may come up with their child. Please stop by or call with any questions! Go to my Topic Info and Outside Resources pages to find more information.
504 Case Management-
A 504 Accommodation Plan is a legal document that outlines accommodations or modifications that a teacher can make in the general education classroom to help a student with a disability. Your child must have medical diagnosis from their doctor to qualify, and show evidence that they need special accommodations to access the general curriculum. Common examples of diagnoses that would fall under a 504 plan include: diabetes, asthma, ADHD/ADD, severe allergies, physical disabilities or temporary conditions due to severe injuries or illnesses, etc. Click here to go to the PPS site page on 504's for more information.
(A 504 plan is not Special Education. If you have questions about Special Education or Individualized Education Plan's please contact Laurelhurst's Learning Center Teachers).
